Andhra University is a public state university located in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, India. Established in 1926 under the Andhra University Act of 1925 (Madras Act II of 1926), it is among the oldest universities in India and one of the earliest institutions established to serve Telugu-speaking regions through higher education and research. The university functions as a teaching, affiliating, and research institution and offers undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral, distance, and professional education across multiple disciplines.

Over time, Andhra University developed into a major centre of academic activity in southern India and became associated with higher education in science, arts, commerce, engineering, law, pharmacy, and management studies. The university is accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with an A++ grade and continues to support teaching and research through constituent colleges and affiliated institutions.

History

The idea for Andhra University emerged from efforts to establish a dedicated university for Telugu-speaking populations of the former Madras Presidency. Discussions supporting a regional university gained momentum during the early twentieth century and eventually resulted in legislative approval.

Andhra University was formally established in 1926 and initially operated from Vijayawada before later relocating to Visakhapatnam (then Waltair) in 1929. Sir C. R. Reddy served as its founding Vice-Chancellor and played an important role in shaping the institution’s academic direction and organizational framework.

During its early decades, the university expanded academic offerings and established constituent colleges. Contributions from regional leaders and patrons supported infrastructure development and institutional growth. Historical records identify Maharaja Vikram Deo Verma among the important supporters associated with the university’s expansion.

In later decades, Andhra University broadened its research profile, introduced new disciplines, and strengthened postgraduate and professional education. In 2026, the university marked one hundred years since its establishment and highlighted its continuing academic legacy.
