Arts refers to a wide and diverse range of human activities involving creative expression, imagination and skill — encompassing visual arts, performing arts, literary arts, decorative arts and many other creative disciplines. Art is one of the most fundamental expressions of human culture and civilisation, serving as a medium for communication, storytelling, emotional expression and the exploration of ideas across every society and era.

India has one of the richest and most ancient artistic traditions in the world — spanning classical dance, music, sculpture, painting, literature, theatre and handicrafts — with a history stretching back thousands of years.

Visual Arts

Visual arts encompass artistic disciplines that create works primarily perceived through sight:

  • Painting — One of the oldest and most universally practised art forms, including oil painting, watercolour, fresco, miniature painting and digital art
  • Sculpture — The creation of three-dimensional forms in stone, metal, wood, clay and other materials
  • Drawing — The art of creating images using lines, shading and marks on a surface
  • Photography — The art of capturing images using light and camera technology
  • Printmaking — The process of creating artworks by printing on paper or other surfaces
  • Mandala Art — A traditional geometric art form with deep spiritual and meditative significance in Indian and Tibetan traditions

Performing Arts

Performing arts are disciplines where artists use their body, voice or instruments to express creativity before an audience:

  • Dance — India is home to eight classical dance forms including Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Odissi, Kuchipudi, Manipuri, Mohiniyattam, Kathakali and Sattriya
  • Music — Indian classical music encompasses the Hindustani and Carnatic traditions, alongside a rich diversity of folk and devotional music forms
  • Theatre — India has a vibrant tradition of classical Sanskrit theatre, folk theatre and modern drama
  • Cinema — India has one of the world's largest film industries, including Bollywood, Tollywood, Kollywood and many regional industries

Literary Arts

Literary arts encompass creative writing and expression through language:

  • Poetry — One of the oldest literary art forms with a rich tradition in Sanskrit, Hindi, Urdu, Tamil and other Indian languages
  • Fiction and Prose — Novels, short stories and essays expressing human experience and imagination
  • Drama and Playwriting — Written works intended for theatrical performance

Decorative and Applied Arts

  • Handicrafts — India is renowned for its extraordinary diversity of handicrafts including Pattachitra, Warli painting, Madhubani, Bidriware, Zardozi embroidery and Pashmina weaving
  • Architecture — The art and science of designing and constructing buildings and spaces
  • Textile Arts — Weaving, embroidery, block printing and dyeing traditions

Arts in India

India's artistic heritage is among the oldest and most diverse in the world. From the prehistoric rock paintings at Bhimbetka to the magnificent temple sculptures of the Chola dynasty, from the Mughal miniature paintings to the Bengal School of Art and modern Indian painting — Indian art reflects thousands of years of creative evolution across diverse cultures, religions and regions.

Classical Indian art forms are deeply connected to spirituality and philosophy. The Natya Shastra — an ancient Sanskrit treatise on the performing arts — laid down the theoretical foundations of Indian classical dance and drama. The Ajanta and Ellora Caves contain some of the finest examples of ancient Indian painting and sculpture, recognised as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Contemporary Indian artists such as Raja Ravi Varma, Amrita Sher-Gil, M.F. Hussain, S.H. Raza and Tyeb Mehta have made significant contributions to global art, bringing Indian artistic sensibility to international recognition.
