Chennai, formerly known as Madras, is the capital city of Tamil Nadu and one of the largest metropolitan cities in India. Located on the Coromandel Coast along the Bay of Bengal, Chennai serves as a major center for administration, commerce, education, healthcare, culture, and technology in South India. The city is often referred to as the "Gateway to South India" and the "Cultural Capital of South India".

History

The region around present-day Chennai has been inhabited since ancient times and was historically part of the region known as Tondaimandalam. The area came under the rule of various dynasties including the Cholas, Pallavas, Vijayanagara Empire, and later European colonial powers.

In 1639, the English East India Company acquired land from local rulers and established a trading settlement. The construction of Fort St. George in 1640 laid the foundation for the growth of the city of Madras. During British rule, Madras became the capital of the Madras Presidency and an important administrative center in southern India.

After India's independence in 1947, Madras became the capital of Madras State. In 1996, the city was officially renamed Chennai.
