Colorado is a state located in the Mountain West region of the western United States — bordered by Wyoming to the north, Nebraska and Kansas to the east, Oklahoma and New Mexico to the south and Utah to the west. It is the 8th largest US state by area — covering approximately 269,837 square kilometres — and home to approximately 5.8 million people. Colorado's capital and largest city is Denver — famously known as the Mile High City for its elevation of exactly one mile (5,280 feet / 1,609 metres) above sea level. Colorado became the 38th state of the United States on 1 August 1876 — earning its nickname The Centennial State as it was admitted to the Union in the centennial year of American independence.
Colorado is internationally renowned for its spectacular natural beauty — particularly the Rocky Mountains that run through the centre of the state — and for its world-class skiing and outdoor recreation. It is also increasingly recognised as a major centre of science, technology, healthcare and biomedical research — home to the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora — one of America's premier academic medical and research institutions — where distinguished scientists and researchers from across the world, including from India, conduct cutting-edge biomedical research.
Geography
Colorado's geography is defined by extraordinary diversity — encompassing the soaring peaks of the Rocky Mountains, vast high plains, deep river canyons, alpine meadows and arid plateaus:
The Rocky Mountains
The Rocky Mountains dominate the central and western portions of Colorado — forming one of the most spectacular mountain landscapes on Earth. Colorado has more peaks above 14,000 feet (4,267 metres) — known as Fourteeners — than any other US state, with 58 peaks meeting this threshold. The highest point in Colorado is Mount Elbert — at 14,440 feet (4,401 metres) — the second highest peak in the contiguous United States.
Major mountain ranges in Colorado include the Front Range (adjacent to Denver and the eastern cities), the Sawatch Range (home to most of the Fourteeners), the San Juan Mountains, the Elk Mountains and the Mosquito Range — collectively creating a landscape of extraordinary grandeur and ecological diversity.
The Eastern Plains
East of the Rocky Mountains, Colorado transitions into the vast, flat High Plains — part of the Great Plains that stretch across the central United States. This region is dominated by agriculture — including wheat farming, cattle ranching and more recently, energy production.
Major Rivers
Colorado is the source of several of America's most important rivers — including the Colorado River (which flows southwest through Utah, Arizona and into Mexico), the Arkansas River, the Rio Grande and the South Platte River — all of which originate in the Colorado Rockies and provide water to millions of people across the western United States.
Climate
Colorado's climate varies dramatically by elevation and geography — from the semi-arid high plains of the east to the alpine tundra of the highest mountain peaks. Denver and the Front Range cities enjoy approximately 300 days of sunshine per year — with warm summers, cold winters and relatively low humidity. The mountains receive abundant snowfall — making Colorado one of the world's premier skiing destinations.
History
Indigenous Peoples
Colorado has been inhabited for at least 13,000 years — with evidence of some of the earliest human occupation in North America found in the state. Indigenous peoples including the Ute, Cheyenne, Arapaho, Navajo and ancestral Pueblo peoples (the Anasazi) have called Colorado home for thousands of years. The magnificent cliff dwellings of Mesa Verde — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — stand as testament to the extraordinary sophistication of the ancestral Pueblo civilisation that flourished in southwestern Colorado between approximately 600 and 1300 CE.
Spanish and Mexican Period
Spanish explorers entered present-day Colorado in the 16th century — and the region formed part of the Spanish colonial empire before passing to Mexico following Mexican independence in 1821.
American Acquisition and Settlement
Following the Mexican-American War (1846–48), the eastern portion of Colorado was acquired by the United States through the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo (1848) and the Gadsden Purchase (1853). The western portion was acquired through the annexation of Texas. The discovery of gold near Denver in 1858 — the Pikes Peak Gold Rush — triggered a massive influx of settlers and transformed Colorado from a remote frontier territory into a rapidly growing population centre.
Statehood
Colorado was admitted to the Union as the 38th state on 1 August 1876 — during the centennial year of American independence — earning its enduring nickname The Centennial State.
20th and 21st Century
The 20th century saw Colorado's economy diversify from mining and agriculture into manufacturing, defence, aerospace, tourism and — increasingly — technology and healthcare. The post-World War II period brought rapid population growth — particularly along the Front Range urban corridor from Fort Collins to Pueblo — driven by the expansion of Denver and its suburbs including Aurora. Colorado has been one of the fastest-growing states in the United States throughout the late 20th and early 21st centuries.
