Doordarshan (abbreviated as DD) is India's public service television broadcaster and one of the largest broadcasting organizations in the world. It operates under Prasar Bharati, India's autonomous public broadcasting corporation, and provides television programming in multiple languages to audiences across the country. Established in 1959, Doordarshan played a pioneering role in the development of television broadcasting in India and remains an important medium for news, education, culture, and public information.

History

Doordarshan began as an experimental television service in Delhi on 15 September 1959 under the administration of All India Radio. Initially, broadcasts were limited and educational in nature. Regular daily transmissions commenced in 1965, and television services gradually expanded to other parts of India.

In 1976, Doordarshan was separated from All India Radio and became an independent broadcasting entity. The introduction of satellite broadcasting and the expansion of terrestrial transmitters during the 1980s significantly increased its reach. The launch of national broadcasts transformed Doordarshan into India's primary television network.

The broadcaster gained widespread popularity during the 1980s and early 1990s through serials such as Ramayan, Mahabharat, Hum Log, Buniyaad, and Malgudi Days, which became cultural landmarks in Indian television history.
