Dr. Sudhanshu Raman is an Indian fisheries scientist, aquaculture researcher, academician and fisheries development professional recognised for his contributions to fish nutrition, sustainable aquaculture, fisheries policy implementation and aquatic resource management in India. He currently serves as Assistant Professor in the Department of Aquaculture at the College of Fisheries, Rani Lakshmi Bai Central Agricultural University (RLBCAU), Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh — an Institution of National Importance established by the Government of India.

Dr. Raman has been actively associated with several national fisheries initiatives, particularly the Government of India's flagship programme Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY). Over the years, he has worked with premier fisheries organisations including the National Fisheries Development Board and the Department of Fisheries, Government of Assam — contributing to fisheries infrastructure development, reservoir fisheries planning, aquaculture sustainability, aquatic animal health and farmer-oriented extension programmes across India. He has also developed two fisheries analytical tools — FishProxCompAnalyzer and AquaAnalytix — reflecting his integration of computational approaches into fisheries science.

Early Life and Education

Dr. Sudhanshu Raman was born on 5 December 1990 in India. He pursued his undergraduate education in fisheries science at Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, earning his Bachelor of Fisheries Science (B.F.Sc.) degree in 2013.

He subsequently completed his Master of Fisheries Science (M.F.Sc.) in Fish Biotechnology in 2015. Driven by a growing interest in aquaculture nutrition and sustainable feed technology, he pursued doctoral research at ICAR-Central Institute of Fisheries Education (ICAR-CIFE), Mumbai — one of India's leading fisheries research institutions — earning his Ph.D. in Fish Nutrition and Feed Technology in 2022.

His doctoral research focused on the development of sustainable aquafeeds using alternative plant-based ingredients, fermented feed technologies and nutritional interventions aimed at improving fish growth performance and feed efficiency in aquaculture systems.

His academic qualifications include:

  • B.F.Sc. — Fisheries Science — Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (2013)
  • M.F.Sc. — Fish Biotechnology (2015)
  • Ph.D. — Fish Nutrition and Feed Technology — ICAR-Central Institute of Fisheries Education (2022)

Professional Career

National Fisheries Development Board (2017-2023)

Dr. Raman began his professional career in 2017 as Consultant (Technical) with the National Fisheries Development Board under the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Government of India.

During his tenure, he contributed to the planning, implementation and monitoring of fisheries development projects under the Blue Revolution Scheme. His work involved cold-water fisheries development, wetland fisheries management, paddy-cum-fish culture promotion, fisheries infrastructure planning and monitoring and evaluation of fisheries projects in northeastern India.

He handled various fisheries and aquaculture developmental projects across northeastern Indian states — including Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Sikkim — and conducted training programmes for state fisheries officials on the Blue Revolution Scheme web portal for states and Union Territories including Mizoram, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

He also played a key role in the implementation of Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), with responsibilities including preparation and technical appraisal of Detailed Project Reports (DPRs), reservoir fisheries planning, aquatic animal health laboratory monitoring, fisheries infrastructure development, technical coordination with state fisheries departments and policy implementation support.

Dr. Raman also worked in coordination with international fisheries organisations including the Network of Aquaculture Centres in Asia-Pacific (NACA) and the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT).

Department of Fisheries, Government of Assam (2023)

In 2023, Dr. Raman joined the Department of Fisheries, Government of Assam as Deputy State Programme Manager under PMMSY. In this role, he coordinated fisheries development activities throughout Assam and supported implementation of aquaculture and inland fisheries projects — including fisheries project planning and execution, technical evaluation of aquaculture projects, monitoring of PMMSY-supported schemes, fisheries infrastructure development, farmer-oriented training programmes and capacity building and extension activities.

Rani Lakshmi Bai Central Agricultural University (June 2024 — Present)

In June 2024, Dr. Raman joined Rani Lakshmi Bai Central Agricultural University (RLBCAU) as Assistant Professor in the Department of Aquaculture at the College of Fisheries, Datia, Madhya Pradesh. As an academician, researcher and trainer, he is actively involved in teaching undergraduate and postgraduate fisheries courses, research supervision, fisheries extension and outreach activities, skill development and entrepreneurship training, sustainable aquaculture research and fisheries technology dissemination.

He has conducted several training programmes for students, fish farmers, entrepreneurs and fisheries professionals on fish feed formulation and management, biofloc aquaculture systems, ornamental fish culture, aquarium fabrication, aquatic animal health management and reservoir and inland fisheries development.

Research and Scientific Contributions

Dr. Raman's research focuses on developing sustainable, economically viable and environmentally responsible aquaculture technologies. His major research areas include fish nutrition and feed technology, sustainable aquaculture systems, plant-based aquafeed ingredients, fermented feed technology, fish genomics and molecular biology, aquatic animal health management, reservoir and inland fisheries development and bioinformatics applications in fisheries science.

He has worked extensively with molecular biology and bioinformatics techniques including PCR, Real-time PCR, ELISA, Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) and Ion Torrent sequencing platforms.

Software Tools Developed

Dr. Raman has contributed to the development of two fisheries analytical and computational tools:

  • FishProxCompAnalyzer — An R package for fish and feed proximate composition analysis
  • AquaAnalytix — A water quality analytical package designed for aquaculture applications
