Situated on the southern banks of the mighty Brahmaputra River, Guwahati serves as the Gateway to Northeast India and is the most important urban centre of the entire northeastern region. The city is home to the famous Kamakhya Temple, one of the most significant Shakti shrines in India, and serves as a major hub for trade, transport, education and tourism in the region.

History

Guwahati has an ancient history dating back thousands of years. Known in ancient times as Pragjyotishpura — meaning the City of Eastern Light — it was the capital of the Kamarupa Kingdom, one of the earliest kingdoms in the region. The city finds mention in ancient texts including the Mahabharata and various Puranas.

The city was later known as Durjaya under the Pala dynasty and subsequently as Guwahati, a name derived from the Assamese words guwa (areca nut) and haat (market), reflecting its historical importance as a trading centre for areca nuts.

During the Ahom kingdom era, Guwahati served as a strategic military outpost. The British established administrative control over the city following the Treaty of Yandabo in 1826 and developed it as a major administrative and commercial centre for the northeastern region.
