Hum Do Hamare Do is a 2021 Indian Hindi-language comedy-drama film directed by Abhishek Jain and produced by Dinesh Vijan under the banner of Maddock Originals. The film stars Rajkummar Rao, Kriti Sanon, Paresh Rawal, and Ratna Pathak Shah in the lead roles, with Aparshakti Khurana, Manu Rishi Chadha, Prachee Shah Paandya, and Saanand Verma in supporting roles. The screenplay and dialogues were written by Prasshant Jha, based on a story developed by Abhishek Jain and Deepak Venkateshan. The film was released directly on the Disney+ Hotstar streaming platform on 29 October 2021.

The film presents an unconventional romantic comedy centered on an orphaned entrepreneur who adopts parents rather than being adopted himself. Blending humor with emotional themes, Hum Do Hamare Do explores the meaning of family, relationships, belonging, and social expectations in contemporary Indian society.

History

The project was officially announced in early 2020 as one of Maddock Films' family-oriented productions. Abhishek Jain, known for his work in Gujarati cinema, made his Hindi directorial debut with the film. Initially, Dimple Kapadia was announced as one of the principal cast members, but following production delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, she exited the project and was replaced by Ratna Pathak Shah.

Principal photography was conducted across various locations in India. Cinematography was handled by Amalendu Chaudhary, while Dev Rao Jadhav served as the editor. The musical score and soundtrack were composed by Sachin–Jigar, featuring songs by several lyricists.

Instead of receiving a theatrical release, the producers opted for a direct digital premiere due to changing distribution trends during the pandemic. The film premiered on Disney+ Hotstar on 29 October 2021 as part of the platform's Hindi-language original film lineup.

Upon release, the film received mixed reviews from critics. While performances by the lead cast, particularly Rajkummar Rao, Paresh Rawal, and Ratna Pathak Shah, were generally appreciated, opinions regarding the screenplay and execution were divided.

Overview

The story follows Dhruv Shikhar, an orphan who grows up working at a roadside eatery before becoming a successful entrepreneur through determination and hard work. During the launch of his virtual reality application, he meets Anya Mehra, an independent young woman with whom he gradually falls in love.

As their relationship develops, Dhruv discovers that Anya dreams of marrying someone who belongs to a loving and complete family. Being an orphan, he fears that revealing his background may jeopardize their future together.

With the assistance of his close friend Shunty and a marriage broker, Dhruv attempts several unsuccessful methods of finding individuals who can pretend to be his parents. Eventually, he reunites with Purshottam Mishra, who had cared for him during childhood, and later persuades Deepti Kashyap, Purshottam's former love, to participate in the plan.

The arrangement initially succeeds but gradually leads to emotional complications as the fabricated family begins developing genuine relationships. Secrets eventually come to light, forcing the characters to confront issues of honesty, forgiveness, and the true meaning of family.

Features / Functions / Principles

Hum Do Hamare Do is notable for reversing the traditional adoption narrative. Instead of depicting children being adopted, it explores the concept of an adult choosing parental figures to create a family.

Major themes explored in the film include:

  • The emotional importance of family beyond biological relationships.
  • Acceptance of individuals regardless of their upbringing.
  • Friendship and loyalty during personal challenges.
  • The contrast between societal expectations and individual identity.
  • Romantic relationships shaped by honesty and trust.

The film combines comedy with emotional storytelling, relying on situational humor arising from misunderstandings and family interactions. While maintaining a light-hearted tone, it also addresses loneliness, aging, and the desire for belonging.

The soundtrack contributes significantly to the film's atmosphere, featuring romantic and celebratory songs that complement the narrative. The background score supports both comedic and emotional moments throughout the story.

The performances of the ensemble cast are central to the film's appeal, particularly the chemistry between the two elderly characters whose relationship forms an important emotional subplot.

Importance / Applications

Hum Do Hamare Do reflects changing representations of family in contemporary Indian cinema by suggesting that emotional bonds may be as significant as biological ties. The film examines how modern relationships often challenge conventional definitions of family while continuing to value affection, care, and mutual support.

The narrative also highlights the social pressures associated with marriage in India, where family background frequently influences matrimonial decisions. Through comedy, the film questions these expectations and encourages a broader understanding of what constitutes a family.

As one of the prominent Hindi-language films released directly on a digital streaming platform during the COVID-19 period, the film represents the industry's adaptation to evolving methods of film distribution. It also demonstrates the growing acceptance of streaming services as a primary medium for mainstream Indian cinema.

Although opinions regarding its screenplay varied, the film remains recognized for its unique premise and its emphasis on emotional relationships rather than conventional family structures.
