The Indian Air Force (IAF) is the air arm of the Indian Armed Forces. It is responsible for safeguarding Indian airspace, conducting aerial warfare, providing air support to ground and naval forces, strategic airlift operations, disaster relief, and humanitarian missions. The IAF is one of the largest air forces in the world and plays a crucial role in India's national security and defence preparedness.
History
The Indian Air Force was officially established on 8 October 1932 under British rule. Its first operational unit, No. 1 Squadron, was formed on 1 April 1933 with a small fleet of aircraft and trained personnel.
During the Second World War, the force expanded significantly and participated in various military campaigns. In recognition of its service, it received the prefix Royal and became the Royal Indian Air Force. After India became a republic in 1950, the prefix was removed and the force adopted its present name, the Indian Air Force.
Since independence, the IAF has participated in numerous military operations, including:
- Indo-Pakistani War of 1947–48
- Sino-Indian War of 1962
- Indo-Pakistani War of 1965
- Indo-Pakistani War of 1971
- Kargil War (1999)
- Humanitarian and Disaster Relief Operations
