History
The institution was founded in 1980 as K L College of Engineering (KLCE) by educationalist and industrialist Koneru Lakshmaiah. Initially affiliated with a state university, it focused primarily on undergraduate engineering education.
In 2006, the college was granted autonomous status, allowing greater flexibility in curriculum design and academic administration. Three years later, in 2009, the Government of India declared the institution a deemed-to-be university following recommendations of the University Grants Commission. It subsequently became known as K L University.
Following revised UGC guidelines regarding the naming of deemed universities, the institution adopted the official name Koneru Lakshmaiah Education Foundation (KLEF) Deemed to be University. In later years, it also established an off-campus centre in Hyderabad and expanded academic offerings beyond engineering to include law, architecture, pharmacy, management, agriculture, liberal arts, and other professional disciplines.
