Kanpur is a major city in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India, situated on the southern banks of the sacred Ganga River, approximately 80 km west of Lucknow. It is the largest industrial city of Uttar Pradesh and one of the most important commercial centres of northern India.
Kanpur is widely known as the "Manchester of the East" for its historical prominence in textile and leather manufacturing.
History
Kanpur's original name was Kanhpur, believed to be derived from Kanhiyapur — associated with Lord Krishna. The city is said to have been founded by Raja Hindu Singh Chandel of the Sachendi state.
The city gained strategic importance after the British defeated the Nawab of Awadh in 1765. It became a British district in 1803, known then as Cawnpore. During the Indian Rebellion of 1857, Kanpur was a major centre of the freedom struggle. Freedom fighters including Nana Saheb, Tantya Tope, and Azimullah Khan led the revolt here. The historic Massacre Ghat and Bibi Ghar stand as reminders of that era.
After independence, Kanpur transformed into one of India's leading industrial cities.
