Kolhan University (KU) is a public state university located in Chaibasa, West Singhbhum District, Jharkhand, India. Established on 13 August 2009, it is the premier state university serving the tribal and industrial Kolhan region of Jharkhand — with jurisdiction extending over three districts: East Singhbhum, West Singhbhum and Seraikela-Kharswan. Recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and accredited by NAAC, Kolhan University achieved the distinction of becoming the youngest state university in India to receive NAAC accreditation — awarded in May 2016, just seven years after its establishment. With over 80,000 students enrolled across 20 constituent colleges and 34 affiliated colleges, it is one of the most significant universities in Jharkhand.

Overview

Kolhan University is a multidisciplinary public university serving the tribal belt of the Kolhan region of Jharkhand. It was established to bring quality higher education to the tribal and underserved communities of West Singhbhum, East Singhbhum and Seraikela-Kharswan districts — areas with a significant tribal population including communities speaking Ho and Santali languages. The university is situated in Chaibasa — the headquarters of West Singhbhum district and the historic capital of the Kolhan region.

Kolhan University was formally established on 13 August 2009 — carved out of the earlier jurisdiction of Ranchi University to create a dedicated university for the Kolhan region.
