National Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020) is the education policy of India approved by the Union Cabinet on 29 July 2020. The policy replaced the National Policy on Education of 1986 and introduced a comprehensive framework for transforming school education, higher education, vocational education, and research in India. It aims to make India's education system more holistic, flexible, multidisciplinary, skill-oriented, and aligned with the needs of the twenty-first century.
The policy envisions an education system rooted in Indian values while preparing learners for global challenges. It seeks to improve access, equity, quality, affordability, and accountability across all levels of education.
Background
Before NEP 2020, India's education system was guided primarily by the National Policy on Education of 1986, modified in 1992. Recognizing the need for major reforms, the Government of India established a committee chaired by Dr. K. Kasturirangan to prepare a new education policy. The committee submitted its recommendations in 2019, which ultimately formed the basis of NEP 2020.

- Equity and inclusion
- Global competitiveness in education
The policy aims to transform India into a "knowledge society" and a global knowledge hub.
