Prayagraj, formerly known as Allahabad, is a historic and sacred city located in Uttar Pradesh, India. Situated at the confluence of three rivers — the Ganga, the Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati — this sacred meeting point is known as the Triveni Sangam and is one of the holiest sites in Hinduism. Prayagraj is renowned as the host city of the Kumbh Mela, the world's largest religious gathering, which attracts tens of millions of pilgrims from across India and the world. The city is also an important centre of education, law, literature and culture in northern India.

History

Prayagraj has one of the oldest and most sacred histories in India. The city finds mention in ancient Hindu scriptures including the Rigveda, Puranas and the Mahabharata. It was known as Prayag in ancient times — meaning the place of sacrifice — and was considered one of the most important tirthas (pilgrimage sites) in the Hindu tradition.

The city was renamed Allahabad by the Mughal Emperor Akbar in 1583, who also built the magnificent Allahabad Fort at the Sangam. The city served as a major administrative centre during the Mughal period and later under the British East India Company.

Prayagraj holds a special place in India's freedom struggle. It was the home of several prominent leaders of the independence movement including Motilal Nehru and Jawaharlal Nehru. The Indian National Congress held several historic sessions in the city. The city was officially renamed from Allahabad to Prayagraj in 2018.

Geography

Prayagraj is located at the confluence of the Ganga and Yamuna rivers in the southeastern part of Uttar Pradesh. The Triveni Sangam — the sacred meeting point of the Ganga, Yamuna and the mythical underground Saraswati — is located at the tip of a peninsula formed by the two rivers. The city is situated on flat alluvial plains at an elevation of approximately 98 metres above sea level.

Religious Significance

Prayagraj is one of the most sacred cities in Hinduism and is revered as Tirtharaj — the King of all Pilgrimage Sites. The Triveni Sangam is believed to wash away sins and grant moksha (liberation) to those who bathe in its sacred waters.

The Kumbh Mela held at Prayagraj is the world's largest religious gathering and has been inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Held every 12 years as the Maha Kumbh Mela and every 6 years as the Ardh Kumbh Mela, it attracts tens of millions of pilgrims. The Maha Kumbh Mela of 2025 was one of the largest human gatherings in recorded history.

माघ Mela

An annual Magh Mela is also held at the Sangam every year during the month of Magh (January-February), attracting millions of devotees who come to take a holy dip at the Triveni Sangam.
