Durai — known and celebrated as Babu Durai — who lived in Jesselton (present-day Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia) and is credited with building and architecting the first Gurudwara of Kota Kinabalu — a historic institution now over 100 years old.

Purnima Venkateswaran completed her school education in Uttar Pradesh — building her early academic foundation in one of India's most educationally rich states. She then went on to complete her college education at the Delhi School of Economics — one of India's most prestigious and intellectually rigorous academic institutions, known for producing distinguished economists, social scientists and public policy thinkers. Family Heritage

Chempakaraman Pillai — The Man Who Coined "Jai Hind"

On her maternal side, Purnima Venkateswaran is the 'great grand niece of Chempakaraman Pillai' — one of India's most remarkable and historically significant revolutionary freedom fighters.

Chempakaraman Pillai conceived the term "Jai Hind" in 1907 — while he was an Indian revolutionary working in Europe against British colonial rule. According to historical accounts, Pillai coined the slogan when he was working with the Indian Independence Committee in Germany during World War I. The slogan was later adopted as the battle cry of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose's Indian National Army (INA) in the 1940s — and after India's independence, it emerged as the national slogan of India — chanted at the end of every Independence Day and Republic Day address by the Prime Minister of India to this day.

Chempakaraman Pillai also founded the International Pro-India Committee in Zürich — which later merged with the Berlin Committee, becoming the guiding and controlling institution for all pro-Indian revolutionary activities in Europe. He was the only one who dared to demand a written apology from Adolf Hitler for his derogatory comments on Indians — an act of extraordinary courage that speaks to the character of this remarkable man. Despite his monumental contribution to Indian history through the coining of "Jai Hind" — even the name Chempakaraman Pillai seems unknown to most Indians today.

Purnima Venkateswaran's connection to this historic freedom fighter — as his great grand niece — places her within one of the most significant lineages of India's independence movement.

Babu Durai (T.V. Durai) — Builder of the First Gurudwara of Kota Kinabalu

On her paternal side, Purnima Venkateswaran is the granddaughter of Mr. T.V. Durai — widely known and revered as Babu Durai — who lived in Jesselton — present-day Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia. Babu Durai is historically credited with building and architecting the first Gurudwara of Kota Kinabalu — a landmark Sikh institution in Sabah that is now over 100 years old and continues to serve the Sikh community of Malaysia to this day.

The first Gurudwara of Kota Kinabalu stands as a living monument to Babu Durai's vision, faith and community leadership — and its centenary existence is a testament to the enduring legacy of the man whose granddaughter carries his memory and heritage with pride.
