Established as a state private university in 2020 under the provisions of the Telangana Private Universities Act, the institution evolved from SR Engineering College, which was founded in 2002 by the Sri Rajeshwara Educational Society. The origins of SR University can be traced to the establishment of SR Engineering College in 2002 by the Sri Rajeshwara Educational Society, an educational organization that operates several institutions across Telangana and neighbouring states.
