Silvassa is a city in western India and serves as the administrative headquarters of the Dadra and Nagar Haveli district within the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu. Located along the banks of the Daman Ganga River and positioned between the states of Gujarat and Maharashtra, Silvassa functions as the principal administrative, industrial, and commercial centre of the region.

Historically influenced by indigenous communities, regional kingdoms, Portuguese administration, and later Indian governance, Silvassa developed from a small settlement into an urban centre with industrial and educational significance. The city is also recognized for its green surroundings, multicultural population, and role in regional economic activity.

History

The history of Silvassa is closely connected with the broader historical development of Dadra and Nagar Haveli. Before colonial administration, the surrounding region was associated with local tribal communities and later came under Rajput influence. During the eighteenth century, control shifted to the Marathas.

Portuguese involvement in the region began in the late eighteenth century through political arrangements with the Maratha administration. Nagar Haveli was transferred to Portuguese control in 1783, and additional territorial consolidation followed shortly afterward. Silvassa remained a relatively small settlement during this period.

A major administrative transition occurred in 1885 when the Portuguese authorities designated Silvassa as an official town and transferred the regional administrative centre there. During Portuguese administration, the city was also referred to as Vila de Paço d'Arcos, although the local name Silvassa remained in common use.

Following Indian independence in 1947, movements supporting integration with India gained momentum. In 1954, pro-India groups took control of Dadra and Nagar Haveli, ending Portuguese administration in the region. The territory was formally incorporated into India in 1961.

Administrative changes in modern times led to the formation of the combined Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu in 2020, with Silvassa continuing as an important administrative centre.
