Stanford University, officially known as Leland Stanford Junior University, is a private research university located in Stanford, California, United States. Founded in 1885 by Leland Stanford and Jane Stanford in memory of their only child, Leland Stanford Jr., the university is widely regarded as one of the world's leading institutions of higher education and research. History

Stanford University was established in 1885 by former California Governor and railroad magnate Leland Stanford and his wife, Jane Stanford. Following the death of their son, Leland Stanford Jr., from typhoid fever in 1884, the couple decided to create a university dedicated to advancing education, knowledge, and public welfare. The university officially opened on 1 October 1891.

From its beginning, Stanford was designed to be nonsectarian, coeducational, and accessible.
