Established on 27 July 1916 during the reign of Maharaja Nalvadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar IV, it was the first university established in the princely state of Mysore and the first university in present-day Karnataka. The university was established through the efforts of the Maharaja and the then Dewan of Mysore, Sir M. Visvesvaraya. It provides undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral, diploma, and other academic programmes across disciplines including arts, humanities, sciences, commerce, education, law, engineering, management, and social sciences.

History

The University of Mysore was established on 27 July 1916 following efforts to create a centre of higher learning in the erstwhile princely state of Mysore. The initiative was associated with Maharaja Nalvadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar IV and Sir M. Visvesvaraya, who served as the Dewan of Mysore. The university was the sixth university established in India and the first university established in the state of Karnataka. It was also the first Indian university established outside the territories directly administered by the British government.

The legislation establishing the university was introduced in the Mysore Legislative Council in 1916 and was passed in July of that year. The first meeting of the University Council took place in August 1916, followed by the first meeting of the Senate in October.

At its establishment, the university was organised around major academic areas including arts, science, engineering and technology, and medicine. Academic programmes expanded during the following years, with postgraduate education becoming an important component of the institution's development.

The university's academic history includes scholars and intellectuals who contributed to teaching and research in different disciplines. Philosopher and former President of India Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan served as a professor of philosophy at the University of Mysore from 1918 to 1921.

During the twentieth century, the university's jurisdiction and academic network developed considerably. Several universities were subsequently established in Karnataka from areas that had previously formed part of the University of Mysore's wider jurisdiction, including Bangalore University, Mangalore University, Kuvempu University, and Karnataka State Open University.

The Manasagangotri postgraduate campus developed during the 1960s and became a major centre for postgraduate education and research. The name Manasagangotri was associated with poet and writer Kuvempu.
