Ahmednagar District, officially known as Ahilyanagar District, is a district in the state of Maharashtra, India. It is the largest district in Maharashtra by geographical area and forms part of the Nashik Division. The district headquarters is located at Ahmednagar city. The district is historically significant as the center of the former Ahmadnagar Sultanate and is home to important pilgrimage destinations such as Shirdi and Shani Shingnapur.
History
The history of Ahmednagar dates back to ancient times. References to the region are found in records associated with the Mauryan period, including the era of Emperor Ashoka. Over the centuries, the area came under the rule of several dynasties including the Satavahanas, Rashtrakutas, Chalukyas, and Yadavas.
The city of Ahmednagar was founded in 1494 by Ahmad Nizam Shah I, who established the Ahmadnagar Sultanate, one of the prominent Deccan Sultanates. The region later came under Mughal, Maratha, and British rule. Following the defeat of the Maratha Empire in 1818, the district was formally organized under British administration. The present district boundaries largely took shape in 1869.
In 2024, the Government of Maharashtra officially approved the renaming of Ahmednagar District as Ahilyanagar District in honor of Queen Ahilyabai Holkar.
