Maharashtra is a state located in the western and central peninsular region of India. It is the second largest state in India by area and the second most populous state in the country. Mumbai, the financial capital of India, serves as the capital of Maharashtra. The state was formed on 1 May 1960 following the Mahagujarat Movement and the Samyukta Maharashtra Movement, which demanded a separate Marathi-speaking state.
Geography
Maharashtra is bordered by the Arabian Sea to the west, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh to the north, Chhattisgarh to the northeast, Telangana to the east, Karnataka to the south and Goa to the southwest. The Western Ghats run along the western edge of the state, forming a natural boundary between the coastal Konkan region and the Deccan Plateau.
The state is divided into five main geographical regions — Konkan, Khandesh, Marathwada, Vidarbha and the Deccan Plateau. Major rivers flowing through Maharashtra include the Godavari, Krishna, Bhima, Tapi and Narmada.

The Marathas eventually came under British rule following the Third Anglo-Maratha War in 1818. After Indian independence in 1947, the region was part of Bombay State before the formation of Maharashtra as a separate state on 1 May 1960, celebrated annually as Maharashtra Day.
