Denver is the capital and most populous city of the state of Colorado, United States — and the economic, cultural and scientific heart of the broader Rocky Mountain region. Known universally as the Mile High City — a nickname derived from its precise elevation of exactly one mile (5,280 feet / 1,609 metres) above sea level — Denver sits at the eastern foot of the Rocky Mountains, where the vast High Plains of the American interior meet the dramatic rise of one of the world's great mountain ranges. With a city population of approximately 750,000 people and a metropolitan area population of more than 3 million — the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood Metropolitan Area is one of the fastest-growing, most dynamic and most liveable urban regions in the United States.

Denver is a city of extraordinary contrasts and complementary strengths — combining the energy and sophistication of a major American city with unparalleled access to the natural beauty and outdoor recreation of the Rocky Mountains. It is a major hub of science, technology, healthcare, aerospace, finance and culture — and home to a thriving, diverse and rapidly growing population drawn from every part of the United States and the world — including a significant and accomplished Indian-American community.

History

Founding and the Gold Rush

Denver was founded in 1858 — at the confluence of Cherry Creek and the South Platte River — during the Pikes Peak Gold Rush, when the discovery of gold in the Rocky Mountains triggered a massive influx of prospectors, settlers and entrepreneurs to the region. The settlement was named after James W. Denver — the Governor of Kansas Territory at the time — and quickly grew from a rough mining camp into a substantial frontier town.

The completion of the transcontinental railroad — which connected Denver to the national rail network in 1870 — transformed the city's fortunes — making it the commercial and transportation hub of the Rocky Mountain region and fuelling a period of rapid growth and prosperity.

Growth and Development

Denver grew steadily through the late 19th and early 20th centuries — driven by mining, agriculture, ranching and its role as the commercial centre of the Mountain West. The city became the state capital of Colorado when Colorado achieved statehood in 1876 — cementing its status as the political and administrative centre of the region.

The 20th century brought continued growth and diversification — with the establishment of major military installations during World War II, the growth of the aerospace and defence industries during the Cold War and the emergence of Denver as a significant energy industry centre during the oil booms of the 1970s and 1980s.

Modern Denver

The late 20th and early 21st centuries have seen Denver transform into one of America's most dynamic, prosperous and desirable cities — driven by the growth of the technology sector, the expansion of the healthcare and biomedical research industries (anchored by the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus in neighbouring Aurora), a booming tourism and outdoor recreation economy and a cultural renaissance that has made Denver one of the most vibrant cities in the American West.

Denver consistently ranks among America's most liveable, most educated and fastest-growing cities — and has been recognised as one of the best cities in the United States for quality of life, outdoor recreation, restaurant culture, arts and entertainment, and career opportunities.

Geography

Denver occupies a relatively flat site on the western edge of the High Plains — at the precise elevation of one mile above sea level — with the dramatic, snow-capped peaks of the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains rising immediately to the west. The city is bisected by Cherry Creek and the South Platte River — two important waterways that provide green corridors through the urban fabric.

The Denver metropolitan area — which includes the cities of Aurora, Lakewood, Westminster, Arvada, Englewood, Centennial and many other communities — spreads across the eastern edge of the Front Range and into the High Plains beyond. The area is surrounded by remarkable natural landscapes — with Rocky Mountain National Park, the Mount Evans Wilderness, the South Park basin and numerous other natural areas within easy driving distance.

Climate

Denver enjoys one of the sunniest climates of any major American city — with approximately 300 days of sunshine per year — and a semi-arid continental climate characterised by warm summers, cold winters, relatively low humidity and dramatic weather variability. Denver is famous for its rapid and unpredictable weather changes — particularly the chinook winds that can raise temperatures dramatically in winter — and for receiving significant snowfall despite its sunny reputation. The combination of abundant sunshine, low humidity and proximity to world-class skiing makes Denver's climate one of the most appealing of any major American city.

Economy

Denver's economy is one of the strongest, most diverse and most rapidly growing in the United States:

Technology and Innovation

Denver and the broader Front Range corridor — extending north to Boulder and Fort Collins — have emerged as one of America's most important technology hubs — attracting major technology companies including Google, Amazon, Apple, Salesforce and hundreds of startups and scaleups across software, aerospace technology, clean energy, cybersecurity and biotechnology.

Healthcare and Biomedical Research

Healthcare is one of Denver's largest and most important economic sectors — anchored by the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus in neighbouring Aurora — one of America's premier academic medical centres and biomedical research institutions. The Anschutz campus employs thousands of researchers, clinicians, faculty and staff — and drives billions of dollars of economic activity in the Denver metropolitan area. Researchers from around the world — including distinguished scientists from India — come to work at CU Anschutz — conducting cutting-edge research in cancer biology, medical oncology and many other fields.

Aerospace and Defence

Denver has one of the largest concentrations of aerospace and defence companies in the United States — including major operations of Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, Northrop Grumman and United Launch Alliance — driven by the presence of major military installations including Buckley Space Force Base, Peterson Space Force Base and Schriever Space Force Base in the broader region.
