Indore is the largest city and commercial capital of Madhya Pradesh, India. Popularly known as Mini Mumbai due to its fast-paced commercial activity and cosmopolitan character, Indore has been ranked as India's Cleanest City by the Central Government's Swachh Survekshan survey for seven consecutive years — a distinction that reflects the city's extraordinary civic consciousness and administrative efficiency. Indore is a major industrial, educational, financial and cultural hub of central India and one of the fastest-growing cities in the country.

History

Indore was established in the early 18th century and rose to prominence under the Holkar dynasty — the Maratha rulers who made it the capital of the Indore State. The most celebrated ruler of the Holkar dynasty was Maharani Ahilyabai Holkar, who ruled from 1767 to 1795 and is widely regarded as one of the greatest administrators in Indian history. Under her enlightened rule, Indore and the broader Holkar kingdom flourished, with Ahilyabai overseeing the construction of temples, ghats and dharamshalas across India.

The city came under British influence in the early 19th century and served as the capital of the Central India Agency during the British period. After Indian independence in 1947, Indore was integrated into Madhya Pradesh.
