Madhya Pradesh is a state located in the central region of India. Known as the Heart of India due to its central geographic location, Madhya Pradesh is the second largest state in India by area. The state is renowned for its magnificent historical monuments, rich wildlife reserves, ancient temples and diverse cultural heritage. It was formed on 1 November 1956 following the States Reorganisation Act.
Geography
Madhya Pradesh is a landlocked state bordered by Uttar Pradesh to the north, Chhattisgarh to the east, Maharashtra to the south, Gujarat to the southwest and Rajasthan to the northwest. The Vindhya and Satpura mountain ranges run through the state, forming a natural divide between northern and southern India.
Major rivers flowing through Madhya Pradesh include the Narmada, Tapti, Chambal, Betwa, Son and Wainganga. The Narmada, one of India's most sacred rivers, originates in the Amarkantak plateau in the eastern part of the state.
History
Madhya Pradesh has an extraordinarily rich historical legacy. The region was home to several ancient civilisations and powerful dynasties including the Mauryas, Guptas, Paramaras, Chandellas, Bundelas and the Mughals. The famous rock shelters of Bhimbetka, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, contain some of the oldest rock paintings in the world dating back over 30,000 years.
The Chandela dynasty built the magnificent Khajuraho temples between the 9th and 11th centuries, which are now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Maratha confederacy held significant influence over the region before the British established control in the early 19th century.
After Indian independence in 1947, the region was reorganised and Madhya Pradesh was formally established on 1 November 1956. In 2000, the southeastern region was carved out to form the new state of Chhattisgarh.
Economy
Madhya Pradesh has one of the fastest growing economies among Indian states. Key sectors include:
- Agriculture — Madhya Pradesh is India's largest producer of soybeans, pulses, garlic and coriander; wheat, rice and sugarcane are also major crops
- Mining — The state is rich in minerals including diamond, copper, coal, limestone and manganese; Panna is one of the few diamond mining areas in India
- Industry — Indore is a major industrial and commercial hub; manufacturing, textiles, pharmaceuticals and food processing are key industries
- Tourism — A rapidly growing sector driven by heritage sites, wildlife reserves and religious destinations

Culture
Madhya Pradesh has a rich and diverse cultural tradition reflecting the heritage of the many dynasties that ruled the region. The state is known for its classical music traditions, folk arts including Gond painting and Bagh print, and its vibrant festival calendar.
Major festivals celebrated in Madhya Pradesh include Diwali, Holi, Navratri, Eid and the Khajuraho Dance Festival, which attracts classical dancers and audiences from across India and the world.
