Gujarat is a state located on the western coast of India, bordered by the Arabian Sea to the west, Maharashtra to the south, Rajasthan to the north and Madhya Pradesh to the east. Known as the Jewel of Western India, Gujarat is one of the most industrially developed and economically prosperous states in the country. It was formed on 1 May 1960 following the bifurcation of the former Bombay State into Gujarat and Maharashtra.

Geography

Gujarat has one of the longest coastlines of any Indian state, stretching over 1,600 kilometres along the Arabian Sea. The state is divided into several geographical regions including Saurashtra, Kutch, North Gujarat and South Gujarat. The Rann of Kutch, a vast seasonal salt marsh in northern Gujarat, is one of the largest salt deserts in the world.

Major rivers flowing through Gujarat include the Sabarmati, Narmada, Tapi and Mahi.

History

Gujarat has a rich and ancient history. The Indus Valley Civilisation had major settlements in the region, including Lothal, one of the oldest known dockyards in the world. The state was ruled by several powerful dynasties including the Mauryas, Guptas, Solankis and Mughals.

Gujarat was the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the Indian nation, who was born in Porbandar in 1869. The state played a significant role in India's freedom movement. After independence, Gujarat was part of Bombay State before becoming a separate state on 1 May 1960, celebrated annually as Gujarat Day.

Economy

Gujarat is one of the most industrially advanced and economically developed states in India. Key sectors include:

  • Industry and Manufacturing – Gujarat accounts for a significant share of India's industrial output, with major industries in petrochemicals, textiles, pharmaceuticals and chemicals
  • Diamond Processing – Surat is the world's largest diamond cutting and polishing centre
  • Agriculture – Cotton, groundnut, tobacco, sugarcane and castor are major crops
  • Ports and Trade – Gujarat has the highest number of ports in India, with Kandla Port being one of the busiest
  • Tourism – A growing sector driven by heritage sites, wildlife and religious destinations
  • Textile Industry – Surat is also a major hub for synthetic textiles and fabric production

Tourism

Gujarat is home to several significant tourist destinations:

  • Statue of Unity – The world's tallest statue, dedicated to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, located near Vadodara
  • Rann of Kutch – Famous for the Rann Utsav festival and its vast white salt desert
  • Gir National Park – The only habitat of the Asiatic lion in the world
  • Somnath Temple – One of the twelve Jyotirlinga shrines of Lord Shiva
  • Dwarka – One of the four sacred dhams of Hinduism
  • Lothal – An archaeological site of the ancient Indus Valley Civilisation
  • Sabarmati Ashram – The former residence of Mahatma Gandhi in Ahmedabad

Culture

Gujarat has a vibrant and colourful cultural tradition. Garba and Dandiya Raas are the iconic folk dances of Gujarat, performed during the Navratri festival. Navratri in Gujarat is celebrated for nine nights and is one of the longest dance festivals in the world.

The state is known for its distinctive cuisine including dhokla, thepla, fafda, khandvi and the traditional Gujarati thali. Gujarat is also known for its handicrafts including Patola silk sarees, Bandhani tie-dye fabric and Kutchi embroidery.

  • Roads – Gujarat has one of the best road networks in India with extensive expressways and national highways
  • Ports – Gujarat has 48 ports including Kandla, Mundra and Hazira, handling a large share of India's maritime trade
