Shrimati Minatai Sonar is an Indian full-time social worker, women leader and humanitarian based in Nashik, Maharashtra, India. One of Maharashtra's most celebrated grassroots social workers, she has dedicated her entire life to serving the poor, the widowed, the disabled, the elderly and the marginalised. Over decades of tireless service, she has helped arrange marriages for 15,000 to 20,000 poor and needy boys and girls, run a shelter home for elderly and destitute people for three years, helped disabled individuals obtain their disability certificates, saved the lives of women on the verge of suicide, organised blood donation camps and group marriages and worked tirelessly for women's empowerment across Maharashtra. She is a recipient of the Maharashtra Government Samajbhushan Award 2024, the Maharashtra Government Samaj Utthan Award 2017–18 and more than 12 prestigious state and national awards in recognition of her extraordinary humanitarian service.

Background

Shrimati Minatai Sonar lives in Saubhagyanagar, Lam Road, Nashik Road, Nashik, Maharashtra. She is associated with the Suvarnakar community and has been an active member of the Suvarnakar Mandal. Her life philosophy is captured in her own words:

Swatahsathi tar koni jagato, dusryasathi jagale pahije — Anyone can live for themselves; one must live for others.

This philosophy has guided every act of service, every sacrifice and every decision of her remarkable life.

Social Work

Group Marriages

Minatai Sonar's most remarkable achievement is her role in arranging marriages for 15,000 to 20,000 poor, needy and deserving boys and girls — from all communities and backgrounds. She has organised numerous Samuhik Vivah (Group Marriage) events — including events for 15 couples and 50 couples at a time — providing families with the dignity of a proper marriage ceremony at no cost. She has also arranged marriages for blind individuals — giving them the joy of a family life that society often denies them.

Shelter Home for the Elderly

For three years, Shrimati Minatai Sonar ran a Niraadhar Ashram (Shelter Home) — caring for elderly and destitute men and women completely free of charge. Though the ashram had to be closed due to space constraints, the impact it created on the lives of its residents remains immeasurable.

Disability Support

She has personally escorted disabled individuals to hospitals and government offices to help them obtain their disability certificates — ensuring they receive the benefits and recognition they are legally entitled to. One such case involved a man named Sunil Tadse — a man with one leg — for whom she arranged a prosthetic leg and helped him obtain his disability certificate, enabling him to stand on his own feet again.

Free Eye Operations for the Poor

She has arranged free eye operations for poor women — accompanying them to hospitals and managing all paperwork. One significant case involved a differently-abled girl from Nanded whose surgery worth 3 to 27 lakhs was arranged at Brahma Kumari Hospital, Andheri, Mumbai — completely free of charge.

Saving Lives — Suicide Prevention

Shrimati Minatai Sonar has personally intervened to save the lives of several women who were on the verge of suicide:

  • Sunita Shelke of Palshi — who was about to end her life — was brought home, given shelter and employment, and is today living happily
  • Vandana Tak of Nanded — who had lost her parents, siblings and husband within six months of marriage — was sheltered for one year and her second marriage was arranged; she is today living happily
  • A Muslim widow — who was about to jump in front of a train — was saved and her marriage was arranged

Rehabilitation and Support

  • Sheltered and supported Sheetaltai Wani — a destitute woman — for two years, arranged her eye operation and arranged her second marriage at the age of 55
  • Worked with the Takkrar Nivaran Samiti (Grievance Redressal Committee) — helping couples resolve conflicts without bias and restart their lives together
  • Provided employment opportunities to poor widows and unemployed women
