NCERT
NCERT (National Council of Educational Research and Training) is an autonomous organization established by the Government of India to assist and advise central and state governments on policies and programmes for improving the quality of school education. Founded in 1961, NCERT plays a major role in curriculum development, educational research, teacher training, textbook publication, and the promotion of innovative teaching practices across India. It functions under the Ministry of Education and is headquartered in New Delhi.
NCERT is widely recognized for developing model school curricula and publishing textbooks used across educational institutions in India. The organization also supports educational planning, digital learning initiatives, educational technology, and academic reforms aligned with national education objectives.
History
NCERT was formally established in 1961 as part of efforts to create a coordinated national framework for school education in independent India. The council was created through the integration of several existing educational institutions working in areas such as curriculum development, educational guidance, teacher education, extension programmes, and audio-visual education. Operations formally began on 1 September 1961.
The organization emerged during a period of educational expansion and national planning aimed at improving educational access and quality across the country. Over time, NCERT became a leading institution in educational research and curriculum development and contributed to national educational policies and school reforms.
Educational commissions and policy initiatives during the post-independence period expanded NCERT’s responsibilities. These included curriculum revision, preparation of learning materials, teacher development, and support for educational innovation. National curriculum frameworks developed under NCERT became influential reference documents for educational institutions and state-level bodies.
In recent decades, NCERT has expanded into digital education, educational technology, and online learning resources through initiatives that support wider educational access and modern teaching methods.
