Rajasthan is a state located in the northwestern region of India. Known as the Land of Kings, Rajasthan is the largest state in India by area. It is renowned for its majestic forts, grand palaces, vast Thar Desert, vibrant culture and rich royal heritage. The state was formed on 30 March 1949 following the integration of several princely states into the Indian Union, celebrated annually as Rajasthan Day.

Geography

Rajasthan is bordered by Pakistan to the northwest, Punjab and Haryana to the north, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh to the east, Gujarat to the southwest and Maharashtra to the south. The Thar Desert, also known as the Great Indian Desert, covers a large part of western Rajasthan and is one of the largest hot deserts in the world.

The Aravalli Range, one of the oldest mountain ranges in the world, runs through the state from southwest to northeast, dividing Rajasthan into the arid western desert region and the more fertile eastern plains. Major rivers include the Chambal, Banas, Luni and Ghaggar.

History

Rajasthan has a glorious and storied history. The region was home to several powerful Rajput clans and kingdoms including the Mewar, Marwar, Jaipur, Bikaner, Jaisalmer and Kota dynasties. The region came under Mughal influence during the 16th century, followed by the Maratha Empire and eventually the British East India Company. After Indian independence in 1947, the princely states of Rajputana were gradually integrated to form the state of Rajasthan, completed on 30 March 1949.
