Thar Desert, also known as the Great Indian Desert, is a large arid region located in the northwestern part of India and extending into eastern Pakistan. It is one of the largest hot deserts in the world and the most densely populated desert in the world. The Thar Desert covers most of the western part of Rajasthan and extends into parts of Gujarat, Punjab and Haryana in India, and into the Sindh and Punjab provinces of Pakistan.

Geography

The Thar Desert spans an area of approximately 2,00,000 square kilometres, of which about 85 percent lies within India. The desert is bounded by the Aravalli Hills to the east, the Rann of Kutch to the south, the Indus River plains to the west and the Punjab plains to the north.

The landscape of the Thar Desert is characterised by sand dunes, rocky terrain, scrubland and seasonal salt lakes known as dhands. The Sam Sand Dunes near Jaisalmer are among the most famous dune formations in the region and are a major tourist attraction.

Climate

The Thar Desert has an extreme arid climate with very low annual rainfall, typically between 100 and 500 mm. Summers are intensely hot with temperatures frequently exceeding 50 degrees Celsius, while winters can be cold with temperatures occasionally dropping below freezing at night. The desert receives most of its rainfall during the brief southwest monsoon season between July and September.

Flora and Fauna

Despite its harsh climate, the Thar Desert supports a surprising diversity of plant and animal life:

  • Flora — Khejri tree, cactus, thorny shrubs and drought-resistant grasses are common
  • Fauna — The desert is home to the Indian gazelle, blackbuck, chinkara, desert fox, Indian spiny-tailed lizard and a wide variety of birds including the Great Indian Bustard, which is critically endangered

The Desert National Park near Jaisalmer is a protected area established to conserve the unique ecosystem of the Thar Desert, particularly the habitat of the Great Indian Bustard.

Human Settlement

The Thar Desert is the most densely populated desert in the world, supporting a large human population despite its harsh conditions. The people of the desert, known as the Thari or Marwari communities, have developed remarkable skills and traditions adapted to life in an arid environment.

Major cities and towns in the Thar Desert include Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, Bikaner, Barmer and Churu in Rajasthan, and Bhuj in Gujarat.

Tourism

The Thar Desert is one of Rajasthan's most popular tourist destinations:

  • Sam Sand Dunes — A famous dune landscape near Jaisalmer offering camel rides and cultural performances
  • Jaisalmer Fort — A living fort city in the heart of the desert, a UNESCO World Heritage Site
  • Rann of Kutch — The vast seasonal salt desert on the Gujarat-Pakistan border
  • Desert National Park — A protected wildlife reserve near Jaisalmer
  • Desert Festival — An annual cultural festival held at Jaisalmer celebrating Rajasthani folk music, dance and camel racing
