Overview

The University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus occupies a 227-acre campus in Aurora, Colorado — just east of Denver — and is one of the most modern and comprehensively equipped academic medical campuses in the United States. With a research budget exceeding $700 million per year, CU Anschutz is one of the nation's most productive biomedical research institutions — generating discoveries across medicine, biology, pharmacology, nursing, dentistry and public health that are improving patient care and advancing scientific understanding across the globe.

The campus brings together clinicians, scientists, students and trainees in a uniquely integrated environment — where the proximity of research laboratories, teaching facilities and clinical care enables the rapid translation of scientific discoveries into clinical practice — a process known as translational medicine.

History

The University of Colorado's health sciences programmes have a history stretching back to the late 19th century — with the University of Colorado School of Medicine established in 1883. For most of the 20th century, the health sciences campus was located in Denver. In the early 2000s, the decision was made to relocate and consolidate the health sciences programmes on a new, purpose-built campus in Aurora — creating what is today the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus.

The campus is named in honour of Philip F. Anschutz — a Colorado businessman and philanthropist whose generous donation helped establish the campus. Since its establishment, CU Anschutz has grown into one of the nation's most important and productive academic medical centres — attracting top researchers, clinicians and students from across the United States and the world.
